Rafter (or common rafter): |
A sloping timber section or beam supporting the roof. |
Reinforced concrete: |
Concrete which incorporates wire mesh or a series of metal rods to provide additional strength. |
Render: |
A compound, usually cement based, applied to the outer face of a wall, either smooth finished or textured. |
Retaining wall: |
A structure built to retain land which is higher on one side of the wall than the other. |
Ridge and hip tiles: |
Tiles which are located at the apex of the roof and at the junction between two roof slopes respectively. |
Ridge board: |
A horizontal section of timber at the apex of the roof into which the rafters are fixed. |
Ridge: |
The junction of two roof slopes at the apex of a roof. |
Rising dampness: |
The term given to the process by which moisture rises up a wall by capillary attraction, due to the absence or failure of a damp proof course. |
Rodding eye: |
A small, covered opening in the ground giving access to underground drains for rodding or cleaning. |
Roof bracing: |
Timber battens extending diagonally across the slope of a roof, fixed to the trussed rafters as a means of providing lateral stability. |
Roof truss: |
A framed structure designed to support a roof. |
Roof verge: |
The edge of the roof where it meets a gable wall. |
Rooflight: |
A window set within the plane of a sloping roof. |
Rubble stone (or random rubble): |
Stonework laid in an irregular pattern, using natural stones of a variety of shapes and sizes. |
